Abstract

Abstract Electro-optic Kerr effect and the pretransition behaviour investigated for the eutectic nematic mixture liquid crystals E7 and E8 at temperatures above the nematic-isotropic transition temperature (in the isotropic phase). The Kerr constant of these liquid crystals found to be very high at the nematic-isotropic transition temperatures as the molecules are expected to be highly ordered close to phase transition temperatures. The linear dependence of (T - T*)−1 on the Kerr constant is found to be in good agreement with the predications of the Landau-De Gennes model.
