Abstract

EuSr 2Cu 2NbO 8 and EuSr 2Cu 2TaO 8, which adopt a structure related to YBa 2Cu 3O 7−x but with octahedral Nb and Ta ions substitutiong for the 4-coordinate Cu(1) ions, contains Cu 2+ ions, and are therefore semiconductors. Changes in preparative conditions have been found to have little influence on their electrical behaviour, but partial substitution of Fe and Ti for Nb in EuSr 2Cu 2NbO 8 produces metallic behaviour at around 300K, and a decrease in resistivity by a factor of around 10 4 at 50K.
