Abstract

The electrical double layer parameters for Group 4 metal oxide/NaCl solution systems are presented. The surface charge density and the adsorption of background electrolyte ions as a function of the pH of the solution and the concentration of the electrolyte for the ZrO2 and HfO2 systems are presented. Through the use of numerical optimization, the apparent reaction constants for the surface hydroxy group were calculated. The characteristic points of the electrical double layer and the ionization and complexation constants of the surface hydroxy groups are compared with those predicted semi-theoretically.
