Abstract

The molecular quadrupole moments of benzene and hexafluorobenzene have been determined through measurements of birefringence induced in the gases at various temperatures. γ C 6H 6 = −(29.0 ± 1.7) × 10 −40 and γ C 6F 6 = (31.7 ± 1.7) × 10 −40 C m 2.γ C 6H 6 is 55% larger than an estimate obtained from microwave Zeeman measurements on fluorobenzene.
