Abstract
To date, the sport of greyhound racing has received little attention in the broader literature of sports history. Building on the existing literature this article provides an overview of greyhound racing in Ireland from 1927 to 1958 when the semi-state body, Bord na gCon, was established to run the sport. There was much more to greyhound racing than just business and bureaucracy of course. This popularity enjoyed by the sport in Ireland highlights the importance of greyhound racing as a social occasion and as a form of popular entertainment. This aspect of the sport will also be considered as a central part of our understanding of its history in the period.
