Abstract

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are ICT-enhanced courses that are freely available online, able to host a huge number of participants, provide several interaction opportunities, and award either formal or informal documents of certification. While still fairly new, they are a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly significant, embraced and promoted by countless prestigious academic institutions and international tourism enterprises. MOOCs are an efficient and economically sustainable digital tool able to erase time and space constraints traditionally associated with in-class learning and training. Their incredible outreach can thus help support Education in the tourism sector, by promoting both sustainable tourism practices and knowledge and expertise of and around local and/or world heritage. In the following pages, the case of two recent MOOC volumes on "Tourism Management at UNESCO World Heritage Sites" are presented. In particular, provided are a brief history of the design of the MOOCs and a profile of the participants.
