Abstract

The inelastic ballistic pendulum can be analysed by a two-step momentum and energy conservation procedure often presented in introductory physics courses. Here we extend the analysis to a hypothetical case in which the bullet collides elastically with the pendulum block. The main result is that the block rises four times as high.
