Abstract

Abstract This essay is in three parts. Part I explores the references to Egypt in the Hebrew Bible as an ideological construct. A significant number of references to Egypt, particularly in the Pentateuch, can be seen as a way to characterize “the Other” which in turn serves to define Israel over against “the Other.” Part II focuses on specific references to Egyptian activities in the Hebrew Bible and Part III highlights Egyptian influences on Israel with particular reference to political administration, economic exchange, religious ideas, literary aspects and iconography.
