Abstract

This article addresses the problem of efficiency measurement in the performing arts by investigating the highly heterogeneous Russian theater market. We adopt data envelopment analysis and explore efficiency drivers, focusing on two groups of public theaters, classical academic and leading regional theaters. The scope of programming, observed through touring and new productions, is shown to have a negative impact on efficiency. The implications highlight the importance of accounting for the sector’s heterogeneity for more accurate and meaningful measurements of efficiency. The results can inform decisions on programming and resource allocation to optimize both artistic and financial goals.
