Abstract

Left atrial receptors in anaesthetized dogs were stimulated by distension of small balloons at the pulmonary vein-atrial junctions. No significant changes in respiratory rate or tidal volume were recorded although there was consistently a reflex increase in heart rate. It is considered unlikely that stimulation of left atrial receptors makes a significant contribution to the hyperpnoea of muscular exercise.
