Abstract

The purpose of this study lies in finding out of the effects of virtual reality mirror therapy (VRMT) on excitability of the cerebral cortex and upper extremity function in stroke patients. The subjects were diagnosed as stroke according to criteria to select the research targets. The experimental group (n=12) was applied on general physical therapy included VRMT for 5 times per week in 6 weeks. Bereitschafts potential (BP) and motor potential (MP) of movement-related cortical potential (MRCPs) was applied for evaluation of excitability of the cerebral cortex, the upper extremity function of experimental group was assessed using Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), box and block test (BBT). Results were measured at periods of pre-intervention, post-intervention. The BP mean amplitude showed statistically significant decrease. The MP peak amplitude showed statistically significant increase except for C4. FMA, BBT score showed statistically significant increase. These results were show that VRMT increase excitability of the cerebral cortex and upper extremity function. Accordingly, VRMT would usefully be applicable treatment to improve upper extremity functional recovery in the stroke patients.
