Abstract

1. 1. The effects of valinomycin on frog and on crayfish striated muscles were tested by measuring membrane resistances, the response to stimulation and the change in V m following abrupt shifts in [K +] 0 or [Cl -] 0. 2. 2. Valinomycin produces a decrease in membrane resistance and an increased change in V m following an abrupt rise in [K +] 0, suggesting that the drug produces an increase in K + conductance. 3. 3. In the presence of valinomycin depolarizing stimuli elicited only graded potential changes in frog muscle, in fast crayfish muscle and in slow crayfish muscle treated with Ba 2+, Sr 2+ or tetrabutylammonium.
