Abstract

The authors estimate the effect of hosting the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 on Brazilian international travel receipts. Results show that the World Cup generated an increase of about 50% in receipts during the 2 months of the event, while the estimated effect of the Olympics was an increase of about 28% during 1 month. In the month after the events, there was a fall of almost the same amount, and no effect of the previous rise in receipts was detected 2 months after the events. Therefore, these effects were immediate and short-lived.
