Crenshaw, D. M. ; Peterson, B. M. Abstract It is demonstrated that in Seyfert 1 galaxy spectra in which the contribution of the host galaxy is significant, the stellar absorption features can introduce structure and asymmetries into the broad-line profiles. Spectroscopic observations through large apertures (5 or 7 arcsec) of a small sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies reveal that light from stars can contribute up to 70 percent of the total continuum flux at H-beta. It is shown that, to first order, the stellar contribution to the spectra can be removed by subtracting a suitably scaled spectrum of the dwarf elliptical galaxy M32, and it is found that the broad-line profiles become smoother and more symmetric when the stellar contribution is removed.
