Films of lead, indium and silver were applied to hardened steel substrates of various surface roughness and were rubbed against hardened steel balls in ultrahigh vacuum. The effects of film thickness, substrate roughness and sliding speed on the friction coefficients and wear rates are described, and the results from the three coating materials are compared.
