Abstract

Investigations on the relations of the halogens to the morphology of the thyroid gland have gradually extended. The work of Marine and Kimball (1917) had apparently led to good understanding of the effects of iodine until more recent work by Loeb (1920) cast doubt upon the validity of some of their conclusions. The relation of the chlorides or calcium to the weight and structure of the thyroid gland, speculated upon by Rupin (1908), has never been completely established. Goldemberg (1921) reported changes in the microscopic picture of the thyroid gland as a result of feeding fluorides to experimental animals, but Chaneles (1929) was unable to confirm this finding. It is only within recent years that any studies revealing structural changes caused by the action of bromides on the thyroid gland have been attempted. It is important to note that most of the workers in this field have confined their activity to an evaluation of the effect of a single one of the alogens. There has been no attempt to correlate t...
