Abstract

Abstract This paper estimated the household solid waste (HSW) generation and composition in Thu Dau Mot city. The study also determined the socio-economic factors influencing the waste generation of the households in the city by using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. 300 sample households were selected for the study by using a stratified random sampling methodology. The results indicated that the average HSW generation in Thu Dau Mot was 0.76 kg/household/day. These wastes comprised of six categories of wastes, with the largest component of organic waste (67%). The effect of income, household size and environmental concern on HSW generation is statically significant at 1%. This study suggests new insights concerning the role of socioeconomic characteristics in affecting the generation of household waste in Thu Dau Mot city, Vietnam.
