Abstract
A CONTROVERSEY EXISTS IN RESISTANCE TRAINING FOR BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL HITTERS. TRADITIONAL AND ANECDOTAL “HERESAY” SUGGEST THAT STRENGTH COACHES SHOULD HAVE PLAYERS TRAIN THE SMALL FOREARM, WRIST, AND HAND MUSCLES FOR INCREASED BAT VELOCITY. CURRENT BASEBALL/SOFTBALL RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THIS MAY NOT BE CORRECT. THIS ARTICLE WILL REVIEW THE EFFECTS OF SMALL MUSCLE ACTIVITY WHILE SWINGING A BASEBALL BAT, THE KINEMATICS OF SWINGING A BASEBALL BAT, AND THE EFFECTS OF STRENGTH TRAINING ON HITTING PERFORMANCES.
