Abstract

Panax ginseng (PG) purportedly enhances stamina and exercise capacity. However, data are lacking on the effects of PG on exercise performance in adults with average fitness. The purpose was to determine the short-term effects of PG supplementation on maximal (max) exercise performance. Twenty men and eight women (Age=23.4±3.2 years; Height=69.2±3.4 Inches; Weight=165.5±33.6 lbs) were randomly assigned to either a PG or placebo(PL) group for a period of 3 weeks in a double blind design. The PG group ingested 200mg of standardized 7% PG daily. Prior to and following treatment subjects performed a max graded exercise test on a Schwinn Airdyne ergometer. The data were analyzed using an ANCOVA. Table These findings do not support a significant short-term ergogenic effect of PG supplementation on max exercise performance in young average fit adults.
