Abstract

Calculations have been made to determine the shape and volume of the pendular liquid bridge between a pair of contacting equal spheres when the liquid surface is subject to shear stress. The purpose of this study is to simulate the situation in a filter cake during vacuum or pressure deliquouring after air breakthrough has taken place, and so determine theoretical limits to the saturation levels which can be achieved. Such saturations are found to be strongly dependent on the size of particles (lower saturations being obtainable with larger spheres), but weakly dependent on the magnitude of the shear stress in the range considered.
