Abstract

It is impossible in a country like our own to dispense with milk. Our mode of living has been adjusted to make milk a necessary part of the diet. This is especially true for children. Short nursing periods and an exceptionally high plane of living seem to be complements of each other. In countries like China where milk is scarce either a long nursing period is necessary or the prevalence of a high infant mortality must follow. The latter is the situation at present. Of course unsanitary living is part of the picture of a high infant mortality in China. Attempts to substitute a vegetable milk such as soy bean milk have not been entirely successful. This is due to the fact that many deficiencies exist in such a product as soy bean milk. In India there are three distinct regions characterised by the state of nutrition of the inhabitants.
