Abstract

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of lead styphnate were examined after being subjected to a series of irradiations in the graphite reactor. It was observed that the decomposition rate is enhanced and the activation energy for at least part of the decomposition is significantly decreased by nuclear irradiation. It also was found that it did not make any difference in the subsequent thermal decomposition whether the material was irradiated as the anhydride or as the monohydrate. Possible mechanisms for the decomposition of the irradiated salt are discussed.
