Abstract

Experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of progesterone on mammary tumour development in rats ovariectomized 7 days prior to 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) treatment, and also to investigate the effect in intact animals of progesterone when injections were begun 2 days before, compared with 15 days after DMBA.It was found that ovariectomy 7 days prior to DMBA completely inhibited mammary carcinogenesis, but if, in addition, injections of progesterone were given, beginning 2 days prior to DMBA, 25% of the animals developed neoplasms; this incidence was considerably lower than in the control non-ovariectomized group and the induction time was longer. Progesterone was equally effective in enhancing the effect of DMBA in intact rats whether injections were begun 2 days before, or 15 days after DMBA.
