Abstract

Cadmium sulphide (CdS) is one of the many well-studied II ’ VI semiconductors due to its important optical properties and device applications. The observation of a large diamagnetism and low resistivity in freshly pressure quenched CdS containing chlorine impurities1 indicates the possibility of superconductivity above 77°K in these samples. A theoretical model2 suggests that this anomalous diamagnetism could be due to an excitonic mechanism involving a large number of donor impurities in the high pressure rocksalt phase of CdS. Since little is known about the behavior of these impurities, it is of interest to study the optical properties of CdS under pressure.
