Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of a communication course on self-acceptance, communication competence and interpersonal competence in nursing students. A quasi-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected by questionnaires from 85 nursing students from T university, Busan, Korea. A 13 session programs with lecture, small group discussion, 3 minutes speech presentation, role play and interview were given. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. There were significant differences in self-acceptance, communication competence and interpersonal competence. The communication course that applying various small group activity demonstrated significant change in self-acceptance, communication competence and interpersonal competence. Results indicate a need to applying various instructional methods to enhance the nursing students’ communication competence in communication course
