Abstract

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging contaminant, have attracted the global attention. Recent researches have focused on the occurrence, sources, and toxicology of MPs in aquatic ecosystems. However, the review about the ecological effects of MPs on soil ecosystems is still insufficient. In this study, we compiled a selection of papers regarding the occurrence of MPs in soils and then studied sources of soil MPs. Simultaneously, we evaluated the potential effects of MPs on soil physical and chemical properties, soil microbes, and soil microorganisms. Furthermore, based on the recent developments of MPs pollution, some perspectives for reducing the risk of MPs have been proposed. This review provides a direction for further study on the behavior and the effects of MPs in soil environment.
