Abstract

Language learning strategies were reinforced within the lessons to achieve the main objective of this study, which intended to improve students’ oral production achievements through a direct instruction period (DIP) of memory and social strategies. This quasi-experimental research was carried out in a semi-private school, and the participants were 10 students from an 11th grade. Additionally, the research problem stated was, can 11th graders from a semi-subsidized school improve their oral production achievements after a period of memory strategies instruction and the use of social strategies?. The instruments to collect data were: ethnographic notes, surveys, and pre and post test. Moreover, non-parametric statistics were used to analyze the results obtained from the pre-post tests due to sample size. Results obtained showed that students’ oral production was improved through the memory instruction and social strategies being memory strategies more influential than social strategies. These findings contribute to the expansion of information about this area, in which there is little research in Chile. Key words: memory strategies, social strategies, oral production.
