Abstract

1. 1. The effects of lectins on the feeding response in Hydra japonica were determined with tentacle ball formation assay of the response. 2. 2. Among 10 lectins examined, the lectins from Ulex europeus I, Ricinus communis II and Phaseolus vulgaris inhibited the response elicited by reduced glutathione (0.1 μM) significantly ranging in concentration from 1 to 10 μg/ml of the lectins. 3. 3. Their specific antagonistic substances ( l-fucose for Ulex europeus I, d-galactose for Ricinus communis II, and thyroglobulin for Phaseolus vulgaris) acted as antagonists against their inhibitory action. 4. 4. The lectins also inhibited the responses elicited by l-amino acids (arginine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, ornithine, tryptophan and valine) and trypsin. 5. 5. Different inhibitory effects were observed with different pairs of stimulants and lectins, suggesting that the lectins exert their effect near the location of the receptor molecules on the surface of chemosensory cells.
