Abstract

Antibodies have been raised in rabbit against nitrate reductase purified from spinach. The three activities of the enzyme, NADH-nitrate reductase, reduced benzyl viologen (BV°)-nitrate reductase and NADH-dehydrogenase were differentially inhibited by immune serum and γ-globulin at high concentrations but stimulated at low concentrations suggesting the presence of stimulating antibodies. Non-immune whole serum but not its γ-globulin stimulated all activities of a freshly prepared enzyme, particularly BV°-nitrate reductase. A standard enzyme was used to quantify the relative anti-nitrate reductase content of the whole serum and γ-globulin at 15.8 and 70.9 respectively.
