Abstract

SummaryEvaporative cooling retarded apple bud development, delaying flowering by 14 days. Delays in attaining different stages of fruit bud development were each within one day of those estimated from a model linking evaporative cooling to bud development. Buds from watered trees, however, increased their water content and therefore became less hardy than those from unwatered trees at any given stage of development. Delaying blossoming by this method did not, therefore, confer the expected benefits in terms of frost resistance.
