Abstract

The effects of the estrogenic hormones on the vaginal wall of 25 climacteric women were studied by photoelectric plethysmography and vaginal smears. Another group of 63 climacteric women served as a control group. Part of the patients received oral estrogens, while the others were treated by local application of estrogens. In 14 of the 18 oral treatments and 9 of the local treatments, an increase of both vaginal pulse amplitude and maturation value was observed at the termination of the treatments. Approximately 6 weeks after treatment, both the vaginal pulse amplitude and cytologic picture returned to their initial values.
