Abstract

The magnitude of the effects of the Coulomb interaction between the electrons in an electron gas at metallic densities is estimated for a variety of phenomena. The calculations are based on an approximation suggested by Hubbard ( 2) and are presented in the framework of the Landau theory. The effective mass, the Pauli spin susceptibility, and the compressibility are estimated and compared with the experimental results and with previous calculations. The quasi-particle renormalization factor and the interaction energy between two quasi particles on the Fermi surface, i.e., the Landau f(P, P′), are also evaluated in this approximation. The proper vertex part is calculated to lowest order in the dynamically screened interaction.
