Abstract

The effects of economic reforms on wage inequality in China are investigated. The results, based on a sample of workers who joined the labour force during the reform period, show that economic reforms have increased wage inequality and over 90 percent of the wage differential is attributable to the rise in returns to human capital as a result of economic reforms.
