Abstract

We chose metal ions and organic substances as contaminants in fuel in order to clarify influence of contaminants on the DMFC performance in life test. During the life test, the metal ions in the fuel accumulated in the electrolyte membrane and degraded the cell performance. The degradation was in proportion to the amount of metal ions in electrolyte. On the other hand, in the case of some kinds of organic substances degradations were observed. During the life test, the organic substance in the fuel might be oxidized in anode and that oxidized substance might have an adverse affect on the catalysis in the anode electrode.
