Abstract

The magnetic properties of Gd 1− x Y x Mn 2Ge 2 were investigated. The competition of MnMn, GdMn exchange interactions originates a number of phase transitions. The samples with x ⩽ 0.4 exhibit a metamagnetic transition. The first-order phase transition from antiferro- to collinear ferrimagnetic phase for x ⩽ 0.2 was detected. The Gd sublattice ferromagnetically orders in the antiferromagnetic Mn sublattice for x = 0.5. Both kind of transitions coexist for x = 0.3–0.4.
