Abstract

Root-tips of Allium cepa and flowering shoots of Tradescantia paludosa were treated with solutions of chelating agents (EDTA and quinaldinic acid) and CaCl 2, MgCl 2 and NaCl. Various abnormalities were found at meiosis and mitosis. Chromosome breakage occurred but only in shoots and only after a long delay. The chelates do not appear to be as specific in vivo as they are in vitro. The effects found after treatment cannot therefore be attributed to the inactivation of particular cations.
