Abstract

Introduction: Arterial stiffening is a physiological occurrence where there is a decrease in arterial wall compliance, which alters blood pressure and flow. This causes significant aetiological consequences such as hypertension and cardiovascular events, and, as such, arterial stiffness can be used as a subclinical marker for cardiovascular disease. Importantly, arterial stiffness increases in parallel with ageing, even in the absence of disease, thus the prevention of arterial stiffening is of considerable clinical importance for reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
