Abstract
One hundred fifty consecutively admitted geriatric patients were evaluated to determine the effects of gender and age on the prevalence of alcohol abuse and its detection. Overall, 17% of patients were alcohol abusers. Age and gender effects were evident. Young-old patients (ages 60-74) had a much higher prevalence of abuse than did old-old patients (aged 75+). Men had a higher prevalence of abuse than did women. Physician detection was highly related to the patient's gender.
