Abstract

The cyclotron resonance maser instability is studied for a relativistic electron beam in the presence of a longitudinal wiggler magnetic field i.e. [B 0 + B w sin(k 0z)] z ̂ . The instability is typically broad band with several wiggler harmonics excited in addition to the cyclotron harmonics of the cyclotron maser. At lower wiggler harmonics, the various cyclotron orbits undergo weak oscillatory modulations in the wiggler field resulting in overlapping of the cyclotron harmonics. However, somewhat at higher wiggler harmonics these perturbations grow stronger and the growth rate is characterised by higher cyclotron harmonics.
