Abstract
The major emphasis of the “revolution in mathematics” at the secondary level has been on the improvement of courses in the college preparatory sequence. From the inception of the “revolution” until quite recently, little attention has been given to the ninth-grade general mathematics course. In the past few years there has been a substantial in crease in research and experimentation with ninth-grade general mathematics. Aside from these experimental situations, however, little actual change in the course has taken place. This does not mean that teachers or students have been generally satisfied with the course. It is the writer's experience, from observation of classes and talking with teachers and administra tors, that the general mathematics course is dislikod by most teachers and many students.
