Abstract

INSTRUCTION in clinical phases of dentistry ne cessitates teaching students how to perform several key technical operations. In various dental schools this instruction has been accomplished by a variety of methods. An attempt has been made in the pr?s ent study to evaluate the practical effectiveness of instruction using: (1) a motion picture, (2) a lab oratory demonstration, and (3) a motion picture and a laboratory demonstration combined. The technic to be taught was that of molding a piece of platinum to an amalgam die, preparatory to making a porcelain jacket crown. This particu lar technic was selected because it would be one which a student would have had little opportunity to observe and which would be quite different from anything he had previously done. A color movie with sound track was made, show ing each step and describing this technical proce dure in detail. The instructor who narrated the movie was also the one who gave the laboratory demonstration.
