Some may question the necessity of maintaining neutrality in the stomach, or may even doubt that neutrality provides optimum conditions for healing. Sippy himself, however, suggested that the absence of free acid should be used as a criterion for the effectiveness of treatment, and this conception appears to have been commonly adopted in theory.
