Abstract

This article presents a substantive literature review regarding the effectiveness of online instruction. Standards for comparisons to determine online instructional effectiveness are discussed, as well as contributing factors to its success. Technical support, instructor involvement, a sense of “community,” and pedagogy all have important roles in the success of online instruction. The article concludes with design and delivery considerations, advantages and disadvantages, and current status.
