Abstract

A problem of rust-stained eggs, associated with the rusting of wire-floor cages, has been observed in high rainfall areas of the Hawaiian Islands. The condition is characterized by rust marks appearing on the eggs where they have come in contact with the rusted portion of the wire floor, primarily on the roll-away portion of the cage where the rust has not been worn off by the activity of the hen.Since no literature could be found on this subject the studies reported below were undertaken in an attempt to develop a simple method for the removal of the rust stains from market eggs. MATERIAL AND METHODSPreliminary laboratory studies showed that a 2% solution of acetic acid was effective in removing rust, as well as blood and fecal stains from eggs.
