Abstract

A short duration method (30 days) for producing incipient carious lesions to evaluate anticariogenic agents has been described. Using available clinical tests as the basis for comparison, the incipient lesion method gave similar rankings of the topical effectiveness of anticariogenic agents. Stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and Ethoduomeen-dihydrofluoride applied topically were all found to be effective anticaries agents. Sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate was found to be ineffective. Approximal carious lesions were found in rats' teeth. Lesions developing on the walls of the deep fissures of rats' teeth were compared and likened to approximal lesions and were identical in development to deep fissure lesions in human teeth. Silver nitrate staining of incipient carious lesions was found to give a clear delineation of the incipient lesions in all stages of development.
