Abstract
The principle concern of the present study is to examine how the member states of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) would be affected by an external trade boycott imposed against South Africa. Focus is concentrated upon the level of economic interdependence within southern Africa through an analysis of trading transactions, the export of migrant workers and the communications network. Pretoria's economic and military superiority within southern Africa has resulted in a geography of dependence on South Africa. The level of dependence on South Africa is spatially varied throughout the region and is of crucial significance in assessing how sanctions against South Africa will affect SADCC member states.
