Abstract

SINCE the isolation of vitamin B12 by Rickes et al. (1948); Ott, Rickes and Wood (1948) and Nichol et al. (1949) have reported that vitamin B12 could replace the animal protein factor activity of crude sources of this vitamin. Ott, Rickes, and Wood (1948) reported that 6 μg. of vitamin B12 per kg. of diet stimulated chick growth as much as did crude sources of this factor. Nichol et al. (1949) reported that crystalline vitamin B12 could replace condensed fish solubles and injectable liver preparations in stimulating the growth of hyperthyroid chicks. These workers stated that for chicks vitamin B12 at a level of 15 μg. per kg. of ration was as good as 3 percent fish solubles or as reticulogen (Lilly) given intravenously at a dosage of 0.5 U.S.P. units per bird per day.
