Abstract

The approximal migration of the mandibular cheek teeth of seven monkeys was followed for periods ranging from 3 to 9 months. Spaces were created between the teeth with a diamond disc and standardized radiographs were taken every 2 weeks. The first and second molars were divided vertically; the interdental soft tissues were scraped away every 2 weeks on one side of the mandibular arch. On the contralateral side, the tooth fragments became separated while on the traumatized side the fragments moved together. It is concluded that contraction of the intact transseptal fibre system caused the separation of the tooth fragments.
