Abstract

The characteristics of ZnO-doped LiNbO 3 single crystals have been analyzed and compared with those of undoped and a 5-mol% MgO-doped LiNbO 3 crystal. It was found indirectly from the optical and electrical properties of the LiNbO 3 crystals that doping with Zn 2+ increases the photorefractive resistance. The mechanism suggested is that Zn 2+ ions substitute for Nb Li 4+ in nonstoichiometric LiNbO 3 ([Li 1−5 x Nb 5 x ]Nb 1−4 x O 3, 0≤ x≤0.02) and this approach has proved useful in understanding the crystalline structure essential to analysis of these properties.
