Abstract

Seed priming is one way to improve germination and establishment of seedlings of crops. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of priming with yellow yarrow plant extract on seed germination of canola seed (Brassica napus) and flax seed (Linum usitatissimum) in 2013 at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Islamic Azad University of Karaj. In this study, factorial experiment was used in a completely randomized design with four replications. Factors of the experiment consisted of priming with the extracts of various organs of yellow yarrow at two levels (shoot and root) and five levels of extract concentration (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%). The results showed that by increasing extract concentration of various organs of yarrow, germination percentage and radicle and plumule length increased and that the aqueous extract of various organs of yarrow had stimulating effects on germination characteristics of canola and flax seeds. Maximum germination percentage was observed in priming with yarrow extract and the least germination percentage was seen in seeds hydroprimed (distilled water). The higher germination rate in prime treats with yarrow extract indicates biological effects of this plant on seeds germination.
